Water Softeners; Do They Work and Do You Need One?

Softeners help with softening the hard water, that’s the plainest answer you all are familiar with. This is not a wrong definition, but it surely misses out on many aspects relating to soft and hard water.

Hard water is naturally formed, and it is too common these days. This water is safe on drinking (not recommended still), but harmful for the home appliances and plumbing. With the regular use of hard water, you may find white limescale deposits on the plumbing part, and this is where you need to install a water softener.

Water Softeners

Water Softeners Working and Their Importance

The water softener removes out the hardness causing elements from the water and gives you the softened water in the result.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

The process is based on the ion-exchange mechanism. First, the hard water is filled up in the mineral tank where the beads attract both the hard minerals Calcium and Magnesium. This replaces the sodium ions and it moves out with the remaining water.

Once the beads are saturated with Ca and Mg, the water softener enters into a 3rd phase regeneration process. During the backwash phase, the water flow is reversed which flushes out all the dirt from the tank. In the recharge phase, the salt solution is washed on the beads which again replaces the Ca and Mg. Now, it’s the sodium that gets collected on the beads, and the hard minerals are drained out of the tank.

Signs That You Need a Water Softener

  • Scale buildup is visible on the appliances
  • Clothes are turning grey and color-faded
  • Plumbing requires constant repairs
  • Increasing water bills
  • Stains on the sink and bathtubs

If you are facing 2 or more sign at home, then it’s time you consider buying one softener.

How has been the water softener experience for you? Share in your stories and tricks with us and our fellow readers, by commenting on your answers below. See you soon!

How does a Water Softener affect your Hot Water Heater?

Here we are basically talking about two different systems, Water Softener and the Water Heater.

The Water Softener performs the task of softening the water, turns the hard water to soft. These hard waters will have a high amount of hard minerals like the Calcium and Magnesium in it. The softeners replace the hard minerals with salt, giving you soft water in the result.

Taking the hard minerals into consideration, it does not have any potential benefit to any appliance. So does the softening effect the performance of other systems like Water Heater?

How does a Water Softener affect your Hot Water Heater

The hardness of the water is caused by the high levels of magnesium and calcium in the water. Water Softeners help in reducing the level of hard minerals, and they are generally replaced with the salt elements. Softeners are connected near the inlet of the water supply, and the water is treated in the softener and then passed to the user for use.

How does a Water Softener affect your Hot Water Heater

A process called the ion exchange takes place, where the hard ions are replaced with the sodium ions. Later, as soon as the salt level reduces the system undergoes a regeneration process where the salt level is again brought in the right level.

Average Lifespan of Water Heater

If regular maintenance is carried out for the water heater, then it can smoothly run for a time period of 8 to 12 years. As soon as this time period passes, you can think about buying a new heater for yourself.

Again there are types in water heaters; one is tankless and the other one is a tank based heater. The tankless water heater mostly has the on-demand setup, which makes it last longer than the standard water heaters.

Also, all the water heaters arrive with a serial number on it that determines the age of the appliance.

Another obvious thing, if you are not taking proper care of the machine then it’s ought to get damaged in a short time.

Is hard water not suitable for a Water Heater?

Hard Water is not suitable for any appliance which depends on water for the working. It includes almost all the machines like the Water Heater, Water Sprinkler, Water Sprinklers, Faucet systems, Refrigerators and all the plumbing setup.

If proper cleaning and treatment are not carried out, then you will find limescale and other sediment buildups inside the piping of the system. This will eventually damage the whole water heater. In that case, you could install a Water Softener, and make the water soft first before passing it to the water heater.

Another good read, where waterpeek answered every water softener related questions. You can read it for better insight and understanding on Water Softeners.

That’s probably the only effective solution to maintain your heater from the ill effects of hard water. So, get a water softener and protect your heater. Maintain your water softener, and make sure that you perform regular regeneration to keep the salt level in control. This will ensure a good life of all the appliances, including the hot water heater.

My answer – Yes, water softener affects your water heater but in a good way. To keep up this thing, you need to make sure that your softener is working in the right way. Both the things go hand in hand.

Hand and Nail Problems Natural Remedies with Water Softener

“This Best Selling Hand and Nail Problems – Natural Remedies Tends to SELL OUT VERY FAST! If this is a MUST HAVE product, be sure to Order Now at Amazon.com to avoid disappointment!”

Hand and Nail Problems – Natural Remedies

Hands and fingernails suffer a lot of daily abuse, from washing dishes in hot water to typing on a computer keyboard. Our hands and nails seem to touch everything. For hands and nails that are feeling a little rough, try some of these remedies to bring soothing relief.

Massage wheat germ oil into chapped hands for a wonderfully soothing effect.

You should experience relief of red, rough and sore hands with lemon juice. Apply, rinse and massage with olive, coconut or wheat germ oil.

Try some honey for chapped hands. Wash your hands, shake off the water, do not dry them. Rub honey all over your hands, let them stay that way for five minutes. Then, rug your hands as you rinse under tepid water. Repeat every day until you see a change.

Hand and Nail Problems–Natural Remedies

Red, rough hands? Put one teaspoon of sugar in the palm of your hand, add a few drops of castor oil and enough lemon juice to totally moisten the sugar. Massage hour hands together vigorously for a few minutes. Rinse and pat dry. This exfoliating hand scrub should leave your hands smooth.

A very simple hand cleanser is dry baking soda. Scrub your hands with a palmful and then rinse. Oatmeal works the same way, but moisten the oatmeal with milk first. Rub and rinse.

Farmers have been known to use this remedy for rough, chapped and soiled hands Combine 1/4 cup of cornmeal, 1 tablespoon of water and enough apple cider vinegar to make the mixture the consistency of a loose paste. You will find this mixture to be mildly abrasive. After rubbing all over your hands for 10 mintues, rinse with warm water and dry.

Combine equal parts of tomato juice, lemon juice and glycerin. Massage mixture into your hands and rinse.

If you know someone with sheep you can soften your hands there. Just rub your hands across the animal’s back. The sheep’s wool contains lanolin.

My nails have always been thin and break and split. I am in the process of trying this remedy – supplement your diet with a B-complex vitamin and zinc sulfate (see the directions on the bottle for dosage), along with garlic.

These remedies for strengthening fingernails can help if they are used in addition to a well-balanced diet:Soak your fingers for ten minutes each day in one of these oils: warm olive oil, warm sesame-seed oil, warm wheat germ oil. As you wipe off the oil, give your nails a massage from top to bottom.

For very brittle nails, juice a parsnip, enough for 1/2 cup at a time. Drink it once a day. This method may take a couple of weeks or more before you see results.

At one time or another, you have been around someone who sits and taps their fingernails on the table. Well, this is actually good for your nails – it promotes faster growth.

Personally, I don’t have much time for nail polish, but for those of you who do, you might find some staining from the different color polishes. Try not putting the colored polish right on the nail. Instead, put a protein-based coat under the nail polish to protect from the polish’s color pigments.

This is a great way to get rid of any lingering stains – dissolve 2 denture-cleansing tablets into 1/4 cup of water. Soak fingertips for about 15 minutes. If needed, brush lightly with a nailbrush. Rinse and dry.

Try tooth-whitening paste on a toothbrush, lightly brush each nail. Leave for 15 minutes, brush as you rinse off the paste.

For smokers, nicotine can really stain your nails. Rub half a lemon over your nails. Then remove the pulp, and with the rind, concentrate on one nail at a time, rubbing each one till it looks nice and pink.

For sores around the finger (known as Whitlows), soak first in hot water. Next heat a lemon in the oven or microwave, cut a narrow opening in the middle and sprinkle salt in it. Stick the infected finger in the lemon. It will sting at first, but the pain should disappear within minutes. For  More Info. Visit The Bam Project

I L O V E T H I S W A T E R F I L T E R . . . ! Gravity makes it work (no electrical cost and works during power outages), two black Berkey filters lasts a year if you purify 3 gallons a day. CHEAP! I have two PF-2 filters added to mine to filter out the fluoride added to our city tap water (and any arsenic).

I have a sense of peace and satisfaction I have never gotten from another product other than maybe my first car. (I have mostly retired my car do the cost.)

Buy one of these babies SOON because there is and is no doubt going to be a run on good water filters. You’ll be glad you did. (And NO I don’t sell them nor do I know anyone who does — though I sure would like to sell them).

I decided against distillation, since there are many cons with that process: it produces acidic water (I used to buy distilled water from the store until I started noticing my gums were getting itchy from it), and recaptures chemicals with lower boiling points than water.

This was unacceptable to me since California’s municipal water sources are heavily chlorinated. It’s so nasty, you can smell the chlorine coming out of the taps. I can’t stand the taste or smell of it. I decided against reverse osmosis because of its costs and the amount of waste water it produces.

After much research, I settled on a gravity based microfilter, and Big Berkey came with lots of recommendations.

So far, after nearly filtering 200 gallons, the Big Berkey is pulling all free chlorine out of the water. Here is a pic that demonstrates:

The water on the right is tap water mixed with a chlorine/bromine indicator solution. The color indicates that the tap water in Monterey, CA has more chlorine than a healthy swimming pool. YUCK! The water on the right is from the Big Berkey. The indicator solution shows there is no detectable chlorine! SWEET!

Not to be a buzz kill, but I spend DAYS researching these berkey filters. I even tracked down a gentleman who claimed to be one of the heads of the Toxicology Department, Dr. Portier, at LSU. He said that LSU did infact do ONE water sample on the Black Berkey over 8 YEARS ago and that neither he or LSU endorses their product.

He also said that while the test did take place, that not Himself or LSU authorized a document to be placed on the internet. He said the reason that he was so quick to call me back is because he has had nearly 20 different inquires in the past 8 years asking about this “so called” lab analysis document that Berkey puts on their website.

He also went on to say, that SOMEONE had to of manufactured the “LSU document” because he did not provide ANYONE with that document.

So, even if LSU did do a sample, and if everything went alright, then why did New Millennium Concepts have to manufacture a LSU lab analysis report? Then I got to thinking, if New Millennium Concept (the company the main distributor for Black Berkey filters) is soooooooooooo confident in their product, then

Why don’t they have any Quality Assurance procedures put into place?

Why don’t they have their filters annually tested?

Why don’t they get an NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certification.

Why don’t they have a Micron Rating for their filter…Nominal or Absolute?

Lets be fair here, if you are skeptical about Truesdale lab not getting their filters checked out in 15 years…. is there really a difference in the 10 Years that Berkey Filters have waited?Bottom line is that the Berkey filters make some pretty awesome claims, but do very little to PROVE this to their consumers.

As for Spectrum labs and the University of Arizona… I have yet to hear back from them. This review is not meant to be negative in any way, it is solely to spread information and get to the bottom of this. When I called New Millennium Concepts, Valerie answered the phone was was extremely pleasant with me.

She spent 30 minutes explaining to me how long they have been in business and that the filters were made in the USA and that they were quality and have had ZERO issues with them. Again, that is all fine and well, but where is the proof? You can’t simply say that no one has gotten sick so that is why we know our filters work…

I mean I have been drinking tap water for 30 years now and I am not SICK. That being said, everyone knows how BAD tap water is for you over a cumulative time! From what I can tell for sure, the best part about the filter is that the water collects in a 304 polished stainless steel basin which is far superior to plastic! For this reason alone this filter might be worth buying?

If you want more info on how to contact New Millennium Concepts, or University of Arizona, or LSU toxicology department….feel free to contact me at […]. If we put enough pressure on Berkey, they may spend the extra money to bring peace of mind to its consumers, that is if they past the lab tests?!?

After being contacted by some concerned people regarding my review on the Berkey Filter Elements I have decided to include the following statements. More will be to follow as I get the information. The following information was sent to me via T.ross. I am including T. ross entire reply.

Everything in lower case is from T. ross post and everyting in BOLD is my response to the post. I am not sure if T.Ross contacted the manufacturer or some distributor, but it appears that T. ross, like myself, are still are not getting straight forward answers.

Big Berkey w 2 Black

As a Berkey owner I was concerned when I read this so I forwarded it to them asking for an explanation and this is the response. Also I have found similar reviews made towards other water filters so I am seeing a trend here.

There are several versions of this posting/e-mail of which we are aware and all contain a number of erroneous statements. For More Info. Visit Best Water Softener Guide

Customer Reviews

I purchased my matching washer and dryer at sears and have this exact model. First I have to say this was not my first choice as I tend to want to purchase the “cadillac” of every home appliance. However financially I had to be slightly more modest with my selection. I am amazed with this machine and pleasantly suprised!!

  • It is EXTREMELY QUIET and the loudest part is at the end when it is spinning out the water, it kind of sounds like a quietly-muffled jet engine..lol
  • On the very first wash I did my CLOTHES CAME OUT 3 TIMES BRIGHTER than my last regular top loader.
  • Oh!! And it BARELY USES WATER….It turns to the right then the left coating the clothes with the detergent water until it saturates them completely.
  • Then it begins the washing process where it turns several times to the right and then to the left all the while it basically beats the clothes against the drum as it turns..Kind of reminds me of the old times when people would wash their clothes in the creek and beat them against the rocks.
  • It is such a simple concept and yet it tooks so long to get here!-The other thing I like is the detergent compartment…it has 3 places to put your detergent, bleach and softener and then you walk away, no going back to add the softener.
  • Another thing I noticed is that when the spinning process is complete the drum turns a few more times to the right and left to loosen the clothes from the sides…they come out of the washer fluffed and easy to keep wrinkle-free.I haven’t found anything yet that I don’t like about this washer….I am a hard person to please and I am tickled pink with this!

I love my Whirlpool Duet Sport WFW8300SW (3.4 capacity) Front Loading washer and I’d recommend it to everyone I know. After several major brands turned into duds, Whirlpool and Kenmore are the only brands I trust for major appliances.

Features I love:

I don’t have to guess the amount of water to use for the size of my load. This machine has an auto water level that adjusts to the size of the load. Since there is no agitator, my washer has increased in capacity. I can put more clothes in …… up to 10 pairs of jeans! This model will let me add a garment during the 1st 7 minutes of a cycle before the door remains locked.

I can choose from 3 spin speeds, 3 water temps, and I can add an extra rinse. The 7 preset cycles seem good enough to me but I’m happy I can make adjustments if needed. I love the quietness of this washer. I actually enjoy the sound of the gentle tumbling in and out of the water.

My laundry feels softer and smells better despite that I’m using just 1/3 the recommended amount of fabric softener. An added bonus is that I will get a 0 rebate from my water company for buying this water-saving machine. I wish I could justify buying the matching dryer but my old dryer runs perfectly. Maybe in the future…

Some things to consider if you’re torn between top loading and front loading washers:

Whirlpool Duet

Top Load Washer Advantages:

  • They’re cheaper.
  • Wash cycles are shorter.
  • You don’t have to bend down to get your clothes out of the washer.
  • You can add an article of clothing at any time.

Top Load Disadvantages:

They use a lot of water, more energy to operate, and are hard on your clothes. The agitator is a brutal device that basically “beats” your clothes while drowning them. This is very hard on fabrics, particularly dark clothes, delicates and sweaters (I did see one top loader without an agitator but read that these machines do not achieve the greatest wash results).

  • They are LOUD and can become unbalanced fairly easily.
  • No ENERGY STAR models.
  • They house a lot more machinery, which can mean more repairs.

Front Load washer advantages:

Much less water used – 14 to 20 gallons vs. up to 44 gallons in top load machines. Front loading machine drums are on a horizontal axis. They only use enough water to cover approximately the lower third of the tub while your clothes are tumbled up and around, in and out of the water.

  • They use 67% less electricity and gas. They have less mechanical gear so they don’t have to work as hard.
  • Gentler on your clothes. The drum has no agitator so your clothes will not get whipped around and stretched.
  • Cleans better. The clothes are drawn through the water, not the water through the clothes.

The spin cycle is twice as fast as top loaders, which leads to less time in the dryer. So far I’ve noticed this results in 10-15 minutes less dryer time which equals more savings in energy. Also, there is now considerably less lint in the lint trap after each load.

Less water = less detergent, less softener, less bleach.

Not having an agitator gives 25-30% more space for larger loads.

Longer wash cycles.

Excessive soap suds can create problems for the machine. I am supposed to buy a special soap labeled HE – High efficiency. Apparently many major brands sell this detergent but I haven’t purchased it yet. I have tons of regular detergent and simply use 2/3 less.

I have to bend down to put in and remove laundry. (Whirlpool makes a matching pedestal with a drawer. Pricey, but it’s an option.)

I can’t soak laundry overnight since the water doesn’t cover the clothes. I suppose I could soak in a bucket if needed.

I have to run the “clean” cycle with chlorine bleach once a month. It is important to do because mildew can occur due to the air-tight seal on the front door. I should leave the door ajar after each load but this could be dangerous with cats around.

Now it’s up to you to decide.

I need to qualify my comments by indicating that we purchased the unit from Lowe’s (Model # WFW8300SW) JUST a couple weeks ago… but so far, so good. Got 10% off so it was around 0 before tax and extended warranty. Unexpectedly had to replace my 12-year old top-loading Maytag.

But maybe for the best considering its capacity. Previously clothes would pile up in a hurry with our 6-person household; resulting in mildewed/moldy clothes (read RUINED) and an overwhelmed stay-at-home wife/mom. Now we (OK, my wife) can pound out 2-3 loads a day and stay up to speed with the dirty laundry we produce daily.

  • Anticipated Durability (Consumer Reports indicates Whirlpool has lowest repair-rate for front-loaders.
  • Quiet.
  • Super clean (and pretty dry) clothes.
  • SGreen: supposedly consumes way less water and electricity than top-loaders (too little experience to say for sure).

  • Hecho en Mexico. Is anything made in the States anymore?? (at least it’s closer than China). A lot of Americans out of work/make less money so that Whirlpool can make more $ $ $ . Such is life I guess. Jumping off my soapbox now.
  • Out-of-the-box warranty is short-lived… but that’s common now among washers (refer to Consumer Reports for more on this).

Customer Reviews

Updated review:

I love this washer! I did a lot of research on front loaders and chose this model over other LG’s because it had the features I wanted and was significantly lower in price than similar models. So far I’m very pleased with this machine, which was rated a CR best buy.

It was on sale at a local large chain home improvement store, and it qualified for our state’s highest Energy Star rebate. We’ve had none of the problems that I had read about front loaders in the past–no excessive vibration on a wood frame floor, no water hammer noise, no odor, and the low water usage works fine.

This machine has the features of similar models (other than the steam washers) except for the internal water heater/sanitize cycle, which I didn’t need. It is very easy to use, easy to add options such as extra water or an additional rinse, and easy to change the wash/rinse temps, soil level, spin speed, etc. of the pre-set cycles. It has a stain cycle which I’ve not needed to use yet.

You can also customize a cycle with your favorite options and save it. It holds a lot of clothes, gets them very clean, and is quiet. I thought our clothes were clean with the old washer, but this one cleans better, removing lots of what I had thought were permanent stains. I have yet to load it to capacity; our loads usually show only 2 of 4 possible bars.

A queen blanket and lightweight coverlet and a couple of bath towels also filled it only about halfway. The cycles run longer than my old top loader, as all front loaders do. Most cycles are running between 53-73 minutes. (In my original review I had erroneously said 113 minutes; it was actually 1 hour 13 minutes, or 73 minutes.)

It also has a quick wash cycle for lightly soiled items. Uses very little HE detergent and a tiny amount of bleach (I use 1 tablespoon of Charlie’s Soap powdered detergent) because it uses so little water. We would recommend this washer to anyone. The matching gas dryer works very well, too. I wanted the pedestals but didn’t want to pay the outrageous price for them.

I’ve found that sitting on a stepstool or chair to unload the machines works fine for me, so I don’t miss the pedestals.Although this washer has a hot water wash option, and hot water does go into the machine, there is such a small amount of water circulating through room temperature clothes and a huge room temperature steel tub that the water cools off to just warm almost immediately. I don’t know if the models with internal heaters keep it hot or not. But the machine cleans very well anyway, so this isn’t a problem for me.

Some added info- For those who have had the odor/mildew problems in a front loader: In researching front loaders, the odor issues so common a few years ago were often caused by detergent and fabric softener residues that build up in the outer tub. Bleach kills bacteria but does not dissolve these residues.

To prevent this, use only about half the recommended amount of HE detergent, or use a HE detergent that doesn’t have any additives or residues to accumulate. (The “green” detergents such as Charlie’s Soap are the ones that usually don’t have any residues.)

Also, don’t use liquid fabric softener as it leaves lots of residue in clothes and the washer. We’ve had absolutely no problem in this machine.

I installed an LG wm2050cw, it is quiet and washes well. There was a software upgrade LG has done to models that now ship. I would prefer a longer spin cycle option, as I sometimes manually run an extra spin to really dry my clothes more, but it has the ability to do it. I bought it for under six hundred with tax and install, from a local “orange” big box store.

Santa fe, NM also offered a four hundred eighty dollar credit, so it cost me in the end about one hundred sheets of paper. I also bought a basic GE gas dryer, and put both on pedestals I bought at an online auction site. With a little creativity it all worked out great.

The only downside is the door swings out a ways when you leave it open to dry the tub, some other models I looked at the door was stiffer and stayed where you put it. But the overall quality compared to the other models and the long 10 year warranty on the motor, lifetime tub, outweighed the inconvience.

I also attach a bungee cord to the pedestal and it keeps the door tight when left open. If you obsessed with looks you may not like this. I like the functionality of it, even the delivery man said he never picks up LG washers for defects, but often picks up other higher rated well known brands, no regrets!

I guess though, you could always in anything get a lemon, but so far I have a peachy set up.

One last thing I went through customer service to confirm my serial number had the software upgrade, the call started overseas, collected some info, transfered me to someone in the states, checked my serial number, confirmed update, total call time under ten minutes. I did not need service, but they seemed fast and informed.

Overall, I am thrilled about this purchase. It was between this washer and a similar Samsung model. This LG model provided more options for the same cost so we went with this one.

I love the front load system – no middle bar means less wear and tear on my clothes. I love that it is very efficient with both electrical and water usage. I love the trap door on the bottom left that captures pocket items instead of having them get stuck inside the washing drum.

I really love the upper left pull out drawer that allows me to place the detergent (detergent marked HE – high efficiency – ONLY, otherwise your washer will have too much soap and foam might leak), fabric softner and bleach all at the same time and the machine disperses accordingly.

Thankfully, the delivery man took the time to explain how the machine worked. I need to turn the power button on for each usage, set the dial to automatic settings (the usual) or use the manual over ride for more custom settings (extra rinse, pre-wash, extra spin).

My first wash load was interesting. I stuffed it full of clothes, watched the machine spin it a few times before automatically adjusting its settings to match the load of clothes inside. It took a while for the wash cycle to get all of the clothes wet.

I was a little worried about the lack of total submersion into water like my old machine but the finished product appeared and smelled clean. The machine tells you how long it will take to wash each load (times vary according to size and features chosen) and it plays a short melody when it is finished. The machine is very quiet. I cannot hear it when I leave the room.

With all these great features why only 4 stars? I do have one slight problem with the way this washer leaves a little water behind in the bleach and fabric softner trays. This might not bother anyone else but I find myself using paper towels to make these compartments dry to prevent stagnant water.

Customer service advised that this is a by product of having the automatic dispenser compartments and the even light usage of the washer would prevent a water stagnation issue. For More Info. Visit Best Water Softener Guide

Water Water Everywhere – Water Conservation Is Everyones Business

Water Water Everywhere – Water Conservation Is Everyones Business

Water, Water Everywhere – Water Conservation Is Everyone’s Business

Water Statistics

Our earth is covered by 71% water. Sounds like a lot doesn’t it? With so much water on this planet why be concerned about turning on the tap and using as much as we want? Well let’s take a closer look at what this 71% is really saying:

  • Of that 71%, the salt-water oceans and other large bodies hold approximately 97% of the total water.
  • Of the remaining water, 1.6% of the water is below ground in aquifers.
  • 0.001% is in the air as vapor, clouds and precipitation.
  • Glaciers and polar ice caps hold 2.4%.
  • Land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds makes up only approximately 0.6%.
  • A very small amount of the Earth’s water is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.
  • Of the available fresh water approximately 70 percent of freshwater is consumed by agriculture to produce food for all of us.

Some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability, a situation which has been called a water crisis by the United Nations.

No matter how you arrange the numbers it sounds grim doesn’t it? Perhaps. The sad fact is that for most people in the industrialized world, more than enough water passes within their grasp to meet the majority of their needs. At least the needs of their outdoor world.

Sadly, for most of us in the modern world, it is all to often taken entirely for granted. We turn on the tap and expect it to be there, without so much as a thought of what it takes to get it there or from where it comes.

Water, more precious than oil, fine gems or precious metals sustains life and has been attributed as a gift from both God and the gods (little “g”). It is fought over, rationed, monitored and carefully controlled. Yet seldom respected, protected or cherished.

Water Conservation

The Scenario

Water flows through or lives to the point we seldom give a thought to it, especially after it has served the immediate purpose for which we summoned it. We take a drink from a glass filled with much more than we want to consume, drawn from a faucet that we have let run until the water is cool and afterward pour out, often more than we consume, the remainder to disappear into our sewers.

We wash our vehicles on our dutifully paved driveways and watch as it runs off into the storm sewer, taking with it all that detracts from our symbol of status or pride like a loyal servant.

In our evermore health conscious world, we wash and rewash our hands, allowing the powerful solvent abilities of water to carry away all that might cause us biological harm, never giving thought to the fact that waters abilities are far from being utilized.

We faithfully take our cleansing showers in order to maintain that “acceptable” level of personal hygiene and in the process run countless gallons of water down the drain until the over consuming shower reaches that “just right” temperature.

Outside, we have carefully planted and manicured expanses of high maintenance grass, watered and fertilized to that perfect look and our planting beds are filled with all of the most popular non-native and often exotic plants. Perhaps the beds were once covered with mulch, but it has long since broken down and weeds have become a familiar sight.

We faithfully rely on automatic sprinkler systems to keep everything green and lush so that our piece of the world meets with the approval of all around us. The timers are set and everything comes on regular as clockwork regardless of the weather or need and much of the water gets applied to sidewalks and driveways that need it not.

We go back inside because we’re hungry. We get out lettuce and tomato’s and dutifully wash them under running water because we’re very health conscious and are concerned about pesticides left on our food. We rely on the cleansing power of water to carry away all that we wish not consume and are proud of our conscious decision to live healthier.

After finishing our food, we dutifully put the few dishes and utensils we dirtied into the dish washer and turn it on because having dirty dishes sitting around is not cool. Having just come inside from being outdoors for our healthful walk, our clothes are dirty so we change and faithfully place them in the washer and turn it on so that dirty clothes don’t stack up.

We are proud of the fact that we surveyed the yard and everything is lush and green just as we expect it to be so that our neighbors will approve. But we failed to notice that one outdoor faucet is leaking and that our children failed to turn off the other one completely after playing with their water toys.

Surveying the surroundings, we also failed to notice the puddles of water left at the bottom of that slope after the sprinkler system shut off. But all is green and lush. What’s the big deal? It’s just water – right?

Sound familiar? Sadly this occurrence is all to familiar in our comfortable industrialized societies anymore. All to often we have have become complacent and expectant of what has become a common commodity of our lives. But the reality is that water is not an unlimited resource and it does have its limitations.

A reality that many have been made increasingly aware of through droughts, water rationing and strict management. Yet few of us have yet to come to the realization that wise use of water begins with each of us as individuals. We, as individuals are the single biggest user of water and wise use begins with us, our use, and expectations.

Yes it true that industry and commerce are big users. But it is us, the individuals who use by far the most. Both in our personal lives and through our expectations in life.

Suggestions To Get Started

There is coming a day for all of us that this little appreciated, thought of and common resource is no longer a resource to be taken lightly and for some, that time has already come. Wise water use, like all green living, is not a thing to do, but rather a way of thinking that is developed over time and transformed into actions.

It is not something that one can simply turn a switch, take a pill, or buy. But rather it is developed over time. Below is a list of suggestions to help get you started. Think of this like a test. How many do you do now? How many do you fail at? How many could you do?

Water Conservation Is Everyone's Business

When you are washing your hands, don’t let the water run while you lather.

If your shower can fill a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, then replace it with a low-flow shower-head. They’re inexpensive, easy to install, and can save your family more than 500 gallons a week.

Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You’ll save up to 1000 gallons a month.

Install low-volume toilets.

Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. It’s easy to fix, and you can save more than 600 gallons a month.

Plug the bathtub before turning the water on, then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.

Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and save 4 gallons a minute. That’s 200 gallons a week for a family of four.

Make sure your toilet flapper doesn’t stick open after flushing.

Make sure there are aerators on all of your faucets. This decreases water flow and increases its effectiveness when washing hands, etc.

Install an instant water heater on your kitchen or bathroom sink so you don’t have to let the water run while it heats up. This will also reduce heating costs for your household.

Bathe your young children together.

If your toilet was installed prior to 1980, place a toilet dam, brick or bottle filled with water in your toilet tank to cut down on the amount of water used for each flush. Be sure these devices do not interfere with operating parts.

Turn the water off while you shampoo and condition your hair and you can save more than 50 gallons a week.

Turn off the water while you shave and you can save more than 50 gallons a week.

To save water and time, consider washing your face or brushing your teeth while in the shower.

Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up or runs. Use this water to flush toilets or water plants.

Teach your children to turn the faucets off tightly after each use.

Don’t buy recreational water toys that require a constant flow of water.

When the kids want to cool off, use the sprinkler in an area where your lawn needs it the most.

Water Conservation Is Everyone's

Plant during the spring or fall when the watering requirements are lower. Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and save hundreds of gallons of water a year. Choose a water-efficient drip irrigation system for trees, shrubs and flowers.

Watering at the roots is very effective, be careful not to over water. Water your plants deeply but less frequently to create healthier and stronger plants. Group plants with the same watering needs together to get the most out of your watering time.

Remember to weed your lawn and garden regularly. Weeds compete with other plants for nutrients, light, and water. While fertilizers promote plant growth, they also increase water consumption. Apply the minimum amount of fertilizer needed. Start a compost pile.

Using compost when you plant adds water-holding organic matter to the soil. More plants die from over-watering than from under-watering. Be sure only to water plants when necessary. Water only as rapidly as the soil can absorb the water. For More Info. Visit Best Water Softener Guide
