Hands and fingernails suffer a lot of daily abuse, from washing dishes in hot water to typing on a computer keyboard. Our hands and nails seem to touch everything. For hands and nails that are feeling a little rough, try some of these remedies to bring soothing relief.

Massage wheat germ oil into chapped hands for a wonderfully soothing effect.

You should experience relief of red, rough and sore hands with lemon juice. Apply, rinse and massage with olive, coconut or wheat germ oil.

Try some honey for chapped hands. Wash your hands, shake off the water, do not dry them. Rub honey all over your hands, let them stay that way for five minutes. Then, rug your hands as you rinse under tepid water. Repeat every day until you see a change.

Red, rough hands? Put one teaspoon of sugar in the palm of your hand, add a few drops of castor oil and enough lemon juice to totally moisten the sugar. Massage hour hands together vigorously for a few minutes. Rinse and pat dry. This exfoliating hand scrub should leave your hands smooth.

A very simple hand cleanser is dry baking soda. Scrub your hands with a palmful and then rinse. Oatmeal works the same way, but moisten the oatmeal with milk first. Rub and rinse.

Farmers have been known to use this remedy for rough, chapped and soiled hands Combine 1/4 cup of cornmeal, 1 tablespoon of water and enough apple cider vinegar to make the mixture the consistency of a loose paste. You will find this mixture to be mildly abrasive. After rubbing all over your hands for 10 mintues, rinse with warm water and dry.

Combine equal parts of tomato juice, lemon juice and glycerin. Massage mixture into your hands and rinse.

If you know someone with sheep you can soften your hands there. Just rub your hands across the animal’s back. The sheep’s wool contains lanolin.

My nails have always been thin and break and split. I am in the process of trying this remedy – supplement your diet with a B-complex vitamin and zinc sulfate (see the directions on the bottle for dosage), along with garlic.

This is a great way to get rid of any lingering stains – dissolve 2 denture-cleansing tablets into 1/4 cup of water. Soak fingertips for about 15 minutes. If needed, brush lightly with a nailbrush. Rinse and dry.

Try tooth-whitening paste on a toothbrush, lightly brush each nail. Leave for 15 minutes, brush as you rinse off the paste.

For smokers, nicotine can really stain your nails. Rub half a lemon over your nails. Then remove the pulp, and with the rind, concentrate on one nail at a time, rubbing each one till it looks nice and pink.

For sores around the finger (known as Whitlows), soak first in hot water. Next heat a lemon in the oven or microwave, cut a narrow opening in the middle and sprinkle salt in it.
